This week, the Cuban sandwich was included in CNN’s list of the 20 best sandwiches in the world. Coming in at number 13, the South Florida sandwich has become a popular dish across the United States and other countries.

Whether you add salami to it or not or change up the ingredients, one thing is for sure: this simple sandwich comes packed with flavor.

To make this sandwich, first, you will need to make the roasted pork and then assemble the sandwich. Find the recipe for both below:

Roast pork

Ingredients:

  • 1 lb pork tenderloin
  • ¼ cup olive oil
  • ¼ cup orange juice
  • 2 tbsp lime juice
  • 3 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1.2 tsp cumin
  • ½ tsp ground black pepper
  • 1 tbsp brown super
  • ½ tsp salt
  • ¼ cup minced oregano leaves

Directions:

Combine the olive oil, cumin, garlic, oregano, orange juice, and lime juice in a bowl. Whisk to mix. Add salt and pepper to taste. Add the tenderloin and mix with the ingredients. Marinate for 30 minutes to 2 hours.

Preheat the oven to 450 F. Cover a pan with aluminum foil. Transfer the tenderloin to a sheet and top with the leftover marinade. Cook the pork until the internal temperature reaches 140 F—around 25 to 30 minutes.

Remove from heat and let it stand for 5 to 10 minutes. Slice into ¼ inch pieces.

Cuban Sandwich

Ingredients:

  • Cuban bread loaves
  • 1 lb sliced swiss cheese
  • 1 lb sliced smoked ham
  • 1 cup sliced dill pickles
  • 1 cup yellow mustard
  • 2 tbsp unsalted butter, softened
  • 4 oz genoa salami (optional)

Directions:

Rub butter on the outer side of each bread slice. Add 2 tbsp of mustard to the inside of one slice of bread (not the buttered half of the slice). Layer ham, salami, pickles, roast pork, and cheese. Top with another slice of bread. Repeat the process with the remaining loaves.

Heat a skillet or pan over medium heat. Add the sandwiches and press down with spatula. When one side is toasted, flip the sandwich and repeat with the other side.
