Miami Beach authorities declared a state of emergency on Monday and imposed a curfew from Thursday through Sunday, as a result of the riots that occurred over the weekend during this year's Spring Break.

"We didn't ask for Spring Break and we don't want it," the city's mayor, Dan Gelber, said at a press conference. However, despite not wanting to host these types of vacation activities in Miami Beach, people continue to attend, he added.

City Manager Alina T. Hudak clarified that the curfew will be extended from Thursday, March 24 at 12:01 a.m. until 6:00 a.m. on Monday, March 28, and will focus on South Beach, considered the most problematic area, according to CiberCuba.

Hudak explained that the city only has the power to set a curfew for this weekend. However, the City Commission will meet on Tuesday to address the issue and may agree to maintain the restriction for the following weekend as well.

Local Police Chief Richard Clements said that in the last four weeks, officers have confiscated more than a hundred firearms—mainly over the weekend—the newspaper continued.

On Sunday morning, three people were taken to the hospital for gunshot wounds after a shooting took place on Ocean Drive. On Monday morning, two women were shot during another shooting in the same area, Miami Beach police officials reported.

“Officers are EXHAUSTED. The party needs to end. City officials must take immediate and firm action to ensure the safety of officers and residents,” tweeted the Miami Beach Fraternal Order of Police.
