An eight-year-old boy playing with his father's gun in a Florida hotel room on Saturday accidentally killed a 1-year-old girl and injured a 2-year-old girl, both daughters of the father's girlfriend, authorities confirmed.

The shooting occurred at the Lion's Motel in Pensacola when Roderick Dwayne Randall, 45, allegedly left his holstered gun in the closet of the room where they were staying.

When Randall left the room, the minor found the gun and "started playing with it," allegedly firing a bullet that killed the baby and struck the other little girl.

Investigators alleged that the man attempted to cover up the incident by removing the gun and suspected drugs from the room before officers arrived on the scene, ABC News reported.

Randall was charged with one count of possession of a firearm, and two counts of negligence for storing a gun within a short distance of a minor resulting in injury, tampering with evidence, and failure to keep a firearm in the required manner.

Authorities reported that the man was arrested and subsequently released on $41,000 bail.

Family members of the dead girl identified her as Kacey Bass. The mother was not charged following the incident.

This follows a series of shootings that have shocked the country so far this year and the passage of a law to regulate firearms in the United States.

"While this legislation does not include everything I want, it does include measures that I have long called for and that will save lives," Biden said at the White House after signing the bill.

The bill will require enhanced background checks for younger gun buyers, keep guns out of the hands of felons accused of domestic violence, and help states implement laws that make it easier for authorities to take guns away from people deemed dangerous.

Part of its $13 billion cost will also help strengthen mental health programs and school safety.
