Germany arrests 25 right-wing, ex-military figures suspected of plotting coup

German Special Forces early Wednesday morning arrested 25 people, including many right wing and ex-military figures, suspected of plotting to overthrow the government, federal prosecutors said.

Two dozen German nationals and one Russian national were arrested across 11 German states out of a total of 52 suspects, officials said. They are accused of belonging to a terrorist organization founded last year with the goal of overthrowing the existing government to replace it with their own form. 

"The members of the association are aware that this project can only be realized through the use of military means and violence against state representatives," prosecutors said. "This also includes committing homicides."

The suspects allegedly follow a "conglomerate of conspiracy myths," such as QAnon and the right wing Reich Citizens' Movement, according to officials.

The group's members reportedly contacted members of the Russian Federation in an attempt to negotiate their government's future if the coup was successful.
