After billionaire Elon Musk bought Twitter, a hashtag went viral this week among Cubans inside and outside the island. The curious petition "Elon buys Cuba" became a trend in the last few hours.
A Twitter user commented on why the hashtag #ElonBuyCuba went viral. "Of course, Elon is not going to buy Cuba. It's about the owner of Twitter finding out that there is a dictatorship in Cuba, and speaking out. Which would give our cause the highest visibility yet seen," he explained.

Other users joked that if Musk "buys" Cuba, the technological problems of ETECSA, the telecommunications monopoly of the country's communist regime, would also disappear. Memes quickly followed.
"Days, because the trend this morning is good,” said one Tweet.
"I do not ask that in my town all ride Tesla, nor that all payments in the country are made through PayPal, but I do know that it will improve in everything," said another.
"We need Tesla. Lastly, the cars; first the alternating current", were some of the comments on Twitter.
Defenders of the Havana regime—some allegedly from the political police known in social networks as "ciberclarias"— also joined the debate on Twitter and opined. "Now they invent the hashtag #ElonBuyCuba, and supposedly it is trending in Cuba," they posted. According to the followers of the Castros, this is another example of "manipulation" placed to discredit "the revolution."
Meanwhile, most Cuban users were amused by the initiative on social media. Some even proposed a presidential election between Elon Musk and Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel. The new owner of Twitter and co-founder of PayPal won by KO.
Others joked about inflation on the island and noted that Musk was "rubbing his hands together" when he saw "Cuba can be bought with oil and powdered milk." For "11 million is yours, we split one million for each Cuban," posted another Cuban.
