At least two people were killed and six others were injured in a shooting during an informal car show on Sunday at a park in Los Angeles, authorities reported.

The incident took place at an informal car show at Peck Park in San Pedro at around 4 p.m. on Sunday, LAPD reported on Twitter.

“All of a sudden we heard three shots — pow, pow, pow,” witness Dwayne Ellis told KABC. “Then we heard about 50 or 100 more — pow, pow, boom, boom. All kinds of shots. People were running.”

Four men and three women, aged 23 to 54, were hospitalized from gunshot wounds, according to the Los Angeles Fire Department. Two of them succumbed to their wounds later. An eighth victim was identified after a man drove himself to the hospital with a gunshot wound.

Local resident Lola Warren said that she was near the park watching a baseball game when she suddenly heard gunshots. “People had babies and kids,” recalling the incident and how people ran for safety.

When police arrived, they found several victims on the park’s baseball diamond, Capt. Kelly Muniz of the LAPD said at a news conference.

“It appeared to be a dispute between two parties,” she said about the incident, adding that there might be a possibility of “numerous” people firing shots.

LAPD spokesman Brian Humphrey said the car show was an informal gathering that did not have a permit, instead of an official event. In Southern California, many classical car owners often gather in public places to show off their vehicles.

Police continue to search for the suspects.

San Pedro, located on the southwestern edge of Los Angeles, is home to the Port of Los Angeles, the largest container port in the United States.
