A 2022 video recently released by law enforcement depicts a dramatic chase in which sheriff's deputies from San Bernardino County, California, accidentally shot and killed a 15-year-old girl who was a kidnapping victim and had been reported missing.
The footage from Sept. 27, 2022, occurred after an Amber Alert was issued for 15-year-old Savannah Graziano, who is believed to have been kidnapped by her father, Anthony John Graziano, after the man killed her mother, according to a report by ABC 7 News reporter Tracy Martinez.
A day after murdering his wife, Anthony led police on a long, high-speed chase on Highway 15 in Hesperia, in which multiple shots were fired at officers and other drivers.
The video shows the deadly outcome after Anthony's truck became stuck off the road. Savannah exited the car reportedly wearing tactical gear and a helmet but was unarmed.
He initially dropped to the ground, but then began walking slowly toward the officers after they ordered him to do so.
The audio released by the department indicates that while some agents asked Savannah to walk towards them, others, in a higher area, only saw one person get out of the vehicle and advance towards the agents, so they decided to open fire.
“Oh no,” an officer is heard saying from a helicopter after the victim was shot.
Savannah was transported to a local hospital and pronounced dead. Anthony Graziano died at the scene amid the exchange of bullets.
The footage was released after journalists requested it under the California Public Records Act.
The California Department of Justice is continuing to investigate this case.
