An Oregon couple is being accused of luring two New York siblings and then kidnapping and torturing them for several months, authorities said.
A 19-year-old woman and her 22-year-old brother were lured to Grants Pass in southwest Oregon in June 2022 on the promise of work and “freedom” by their cousin Eastwood Mohammen Mannan, 35, and Cassie Jo Gudino, 27, according to Grants Pass police.
"Over several months, the suspects allegedly forced the victims to work by using fear of serious physical injury and use of torture, such as burning them with a torch, ice baths, beatings, and starvation," police said in a press release.
“The victims were required to give all money earned from online remote employment to the suspects,” police added, as well as force them to do household chores.
The two siblings were subjected to cold showers or were beaten up when they “broke the rules or made mistakes,” according to a probable cause affidavit.
On Sunday, the Grants Pass Police Department received a 911 call from the 22-year-old, who claimed he had fled a residence in the block of Ben Aire Circle, where he had been kept against his will.
When police found the victim, he had broken ribs, a burn on his right arm, and a bruise on his mouth.
The following day, police detectives, a SWAT team, and a Rogue Area Drug Enforcement team executed a search warrant at the residence, rescuing the female victim. She was taken to a hospital to receive medical attention and will be reunited with her family in New York.
The two suspects were arrested at the scene and booked into the Josephine County Jail. They both face two counts of first-degree kidnapping and two counts of first-degree subjecting another person to involuntary servitude. Additionally, Mannan was charged with two counts of second-degree assault.
