Director Todd Phillips and Joker co-writer Scott Silver recently showed the script for the sequel to the studio. Phillips revealed its title on social media last week as Joker: Folie à deux, which refers to a term for shared delusions between two people.

The title may refer to Joker’s on-and-off, sometimes abusive relationship with Harley Quinn, his psychiatrist at Arkham Asylum who becomes his sidekick after falling in love with him.

The Reporter said that if a deal is made with Gaga, she will play Quinn. But the new Quinn would exist in a difference DC Comics universe than the one played by Margot Robbie that appeared in Birds of Prey (2020) and The Suicide Squad (2021).

Sources say that the Joker sequel is also a musical, which would play to Gaga’s strengths as a singer and musician. Her accolades include 13 Grammy Awards and 18 MTV Video Music Awards.

Joker was not expected to be a commercial success by Warner Bros., only budgeted at $60 million.

It gained momentum through film festivals, breaking the record for biggest opening day in October (over Halloween) and grossed $1.074 billion worldwide to become the highest-grossing R-rated film of all time.

Joker earned 11 Oscar nominations, including best picture. Phoenix won best actor for his portrayal of the titular character and best score (for composer Hildur Gudnadottir).

The Reporter noted that Warner Bros. has not yet closed a deal with Phoenix but talks are continuing in earnest.
