Two Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) officers were killed after engaging in a shootout with a suspect, authorities reported.

The officers responded to a possible stabbing at a Siesta Inn near the intersection of Garvey and Central Avenues in El Monte at around 5:00 p.m. As soon as the two policemen arrived at the scene, a suspect shot at them, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department said. The gunman fled the motel through the parking lot.

The shooting left both officers in critical condition. They were transported to the LAC-USC Medical Center, where they were pronounced dead, El Monte police said.

"These two heroes paid the ultimate sacrifice. Today they were murdered by a coward," El Monte Interim Police Chief Ben Lowry said Tuesday evening.

The names of the police officers have not yet been released. However, one was a veteran of 22 years and the other had been working as an El Monte officer for less than a year.

"There are no words to describe our grief and devastation by this senseless act as we learned about the passing of two of our police officers," the City of El Monte, El Monte Police Department and El Monte Police Officers Association said in a joint statement. "It weighs heavy on our hearts and we are sending our support to their families."

"We would also like to thank the El Monte community and our surrounding government agencies for the outpouring of support we have received in the last few hours," the statement added.

Last night, dozens of police cars from the area made a mile-long procession in honor of the two fallen officers that were killed on duty.

One suspect was also killed during the incident, the LA County Sheriff’s Department said.

The shooting is still under investigation.
