Britney Spears hasn’t forgiven or forgotten—at least when it comes to her fellow pop singer Kelly Clarkson. Spears, 40, called out the American Idol victor in a Wednesday June 8 Instagram for comments she made more than a decade ago.
The “Crazy” superstar comments presumably are in reference to a 2007 radio interview Clarkson did shortly after Spears released her album ‘Blackout.’ She was also going through a very public and anguishing divorce with Kevin Federline.
During the radio interview, Clarkson mused that it would be “funny” if Spears was just pretending to be enduring emotional pain to promote her new album.
“Man, but wouldn’t it be funny if she’s just totally screwing with everyone?” Clarkson, then 25, said. She added, “Cause it’d be real funny if she were like, ‘just kidding!’ I mean, think about it. She’s done no press for her album, which I love by the way… She’s done no press, just gets so much press off all this other stuff.”
Clarkson is only one of many other celebrities that Spears has come out against in the wake of her 13-year conservatorship terminating in November of last year. She has also called out other pop-singers such as Christina Aguilera, who she criticized for not publicly defending her.
That same month, Spears pushed out a video on her Instagram of Aguilera giving interviews with journalists at the Latin Grammys. But the specific clip shared by Spears was no ordinary interview because a reporter had asked if Aguilera had spoken to Spears.
“We’re not doing that,” the publicist said, with Aguilera chiming in, “But I’m really happy for her!” Spears commented on the video with criticism of Aguilera by saying, “I love and adore everyone who supported me… but refusing to speak when you know the truth is equivalent to a lie!”
She then added that, “13 years being in a corrupt abusive system, yet why is it such a hard topic for people to talk about? I’m the one who went through it! All the supporters who spoke up and supported me thank you… Yes, I do matter!”
Still, Aguilera had shown support for Spears throughout her ordeal.
In June 2021, Aguilera showed support for Spears with a tweet that said, “
“These past few days I’ve been thinking about Britney and everything she is going through. It is unacceptable that any woman, or human, wanting to be in control of their own destiny might not be allowed to live life as they wish.”
She also added the following:
“These past few days I’ve been thinking about Britney and everything she is going through. It is unacceptable that any woman, or human, wanting to be in control of their own destiny might not be allowed to live life as they wish,” she wrote at the time.
“To be silenced, ignored, bullied or denied support by those ‘close’ to you is the most depleting, devastating and demeaning thing imaginable. The harmful mental and emotional damage this can take on a human spirit is nothing to be taken lightly.”
So far, Clarkson has not responded to Spears’s June 8 comment, but ADN America will be keeping an eye out for any updates about Spears, Clarkson—and Aguilera!
