Ana de Armas, Jenna Ortega and Selena Gomez are among nine Hispanics nominated for Golden Globe awards

Here’s a quick breakdown of who some of Hollywood’s hottest Latinos are and what they’ve been nominated for

This year’s Golden Globe awards will feature nine nominations for Latino actors, actresses and filmmakers. For some of the performers, this is their first Golden Globe nominee.

Here’s a quick breakdown of who some of Hollywood’s hottest Latinos are and what they’ve been nominated for in alphabetical order by their first names:

Ana de Armas

Ana De Armas is a 34 year young Cuban American legend. The stunning actress has been nominated for her role as Marilyn Monroe in the Netflix NC-17 drama "Blonde," a biopic that takes the viewer into the personal world of Hollywood legenda Marilyn Monroe and what she endured.

De Armas told The Sunday Times, “It took me nine months of dialect coaching and practicing and some ADR,” just to get Monroe’s American accent right.

“It was a big torture, so exhausting,” De Armas said.

This is De Armas’ second Golden Globe nomination. She was nominated for best performance by an actress in 2020 in a musical or comedy when she played Marta Cabrera in “Knives Out.”

Anya Taylor-Joy

Ana Taylor-Joy was a Miami-born Argentinian-Brit (she’s half Argentinian and half British) only 26 years old who was raised in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Taylor-Joe just landed her third Golden Globe nomination for playing Margot Mills in “The Menu,” a fun thriller about a young couple who travel to a special restaurant on a faraway island. Needless to say, they get a little more than dinner when they arrive.

Taylor-Joy won her first Golden Globe as best actress in a series for her performance in Netflix's "The Queen’s Gambit" series in 2021. She also landed a nomination for best actress in her role as Jane Austen’s classic character, Emma Woodhouse in the 2020 film, “Emma.”

Aubrey Plaza

Aubrey Plaza is a 38-year old Latina who is half Puerto-Rican. She’s been nominated for best supporting actress for her performance HBO Max’s series, “The White Lotus,” which takes place at a Sicilian resort in Italy. If you can’t afford a plane ticket for the real thing, the series will give you a good feel for the area.

Some of Plaza’s other cast members were nominated and the show was nominated for best limited series made for TV.

Diego Calva

Diego Calva is a 30 year old Mexican born actor who has just received his first Golden Globe nomination for his role in "Babylon," a film about regular people who helped build  Hollywood during the era of silent films in the 1920s.

Calva previously starred in Netflix’s “Narcos: Mexico” in which he assumed the role of a rough and tough drug dealer.

“Babylon” has also been nominated for best musical or comedy motion picture.

Diego Luna

Diego Luna, a 43-year old Mexican actor was nominated for best performance by an actor in a television drama series for his role as Cassian Andor in Disney+'s “Andor,” one of the many Star Wars breakaway films.

Luna starred in “Star Wars: Rogue One,” in 2017, the first time the series starred a Hispanic in the lead role.

Since then, other Hispanic actors and actresses—Rosario Dawson and Pedro Pascal and—have received roles in films such as “Aksoka” and “The Mandalorian.”

Guillermo Del Toro

On the more experienced side, Guillermo del Toro is a 58 year old award-winning Mexican director and filmmaker. He’s currently up for two nominations for retelling the long loved story of “Pinocchio.”

The Netflix movie, which was directed and written by Del Toro was nominated for best animated motion picture, and also for the best original song in a motion picture. Del Toro co-wrote the lyrics to the movie’s original tune, “Ciao Papa” with Roeban Katz.

Del Toro is no stranger to Golden Globes. In 2018 he won the award for “The Shape of Water,” a film that also won an Academy Award for best director and best picture. 

A decade earlier, Del Toro captured his first Golden Globe nomination in 2006, with “Pan’s Labyrinth,” in the best foreign language film category.

Jenna Ortega

Jenna Ortega, a 20-year young actress of Mexican and Puerto Rican ancestry. She’s received her first Golden Globe nomination for her captivating performance as Wednesday Addams in the Netflix series, “Wednesday,” a spinoff from the “Addams Family.”  

If she wins, she’ll be the youngest person to win a Golden Globe for best performance by an actress in a musical or comedy TV series.

“Wednesday” is the second most-watched series on Netflix. It has also been nominated for best television musical or comedy series. 

Santiago Mitre

Santiago Mitre is a 42-year old Argentinian filmmaker. His recent movie “Argentina, 1985” about political unrest in the South American country has been nominated for best Non-English film.

Selena Gomez

Last, but certainly not least, another first-time nominee in the same category as Jenna Ortega—best performance by an actress in a musical or comedy TV series—cat is the one and only Selena Gomez.

Gomez who is a legend at the young age of 30 has been nominated for her performance as Mabel Mora in a Hulu series called “Only Murders in the Building."

Gomez is a Mexican American who also worked as an executive producer on the show.

The crime based comedy is about three true-crime buffs in New York City who have to solve a murder mystery of their own. The show was also nominated for best musical or comedy TV series.
