Two people were wounded during a shooting at a Sikh temple during a religious festival in Sacramento, California on Sunday, authorities reported.

Thousands of worshippers and spectators gathered at the Gurdwara Sahib Sikh temple at 7676 Bradshaw Road at around 9 a.m. for the Nagar Kirtan festival, the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office said in a statement

Sheriff’s deputies responded to a shooting on the temple grounds at around 2:30 p.m. local time. When police arrived, they found two men who had been shot.

The two victims were transported to nearby hospitals. They are in critical condition but are expected to survive their injuries, the sheriff’s office said.

According to witness reports, three East Indian men had been involved in a physical altercation, when suddenly one of them pulled out a handgun and shot the other two, said sheriff’s spokesperson Amar Gandhi.

One of the victims, identified as Karman Sandhu, 21, also pulled out a gun and shot the first suspect before fleeing on foot. He was later located by police officers at around 8:30 p.m., arrested, and charged with attempted murder, Gandhi added.

One of the other men in the hospital is expected to be arrested and booked into jail after he is medically cleared for “security reasons,” the sheriff’s office added.

Police are still investigating the incident. It is unclear what caused the fight between the three men.
