One person was killed and five others were injured at a large house party in Chico, California on Saturday night, local police reported.

Chico police responded to a call reporting gunfire at a house party around 3:26 a.m. on Saturday in Chico, about 90 miles north of Sacramento, according to a media briefing by the police. When the officers arrived, they found six individuals between the ages of 17 and 21 that had been shot.

The gunman allegedly opened fire on a group of people who were standing in the parking lot of the building where the party was taking place, said Chico Police Lt. Terry Tupper.

"The actual shooting was not random," Tupper said, adding that it is still unknown why the victims were targeted.

One of the shooting victims, a 17-year-old girl, passed away from her wounds. The rest of the victims—18, 19, 20, and 21-year-old men—were admitted to nearby hospitals with non-life-threatening injuries. Several have since been discharged.

Police said the names of the victims will not yet be released because the incident is still being investigated. The incident appears to be an “isolated incident” that poses no threat to the community.

Investigators are looking for the suspect of the shooting and are “aggressively pursuing some substantial leads,” Tupper added.

Police had responded to the same party about 30 minutes before the shooting after they received a call reporting someone that was showing a firearm at the gathering, said Chico Police Chief Billy Aldridge. Police located the individual in possession of the gun and took them into custody.

Authorities also learned that there had been a fight at a party after someone was asked to leave. The fight led to one individual being struck in the head with a firearm and another being hit with a glass bottle.

Police are urging anyone with any information related to the shooting to come forward.
