Brazilian soccer legend Pelé was hospitalized on Wednesday to undergo chemotherapy treatment of a colon tumor. He will be discharged in a few days.

"He is in stable condition and expected to be released in the next few days," a spokesperson for Sao Paulo’s Albert Einstein hospital told CNN.

Doctors found a tumor in Pelé’s right colon and underwent surgery to remove it in September. Following the operation, Pelé was in the hospital for one month before undergoing chemotherapy from his home.

"[The admittance was] for follow-up treatment of the colon tumor identified in September this year," said the doctors in a statement.

"When the path is difficult, celebrate each step of the journey," Pelé posted on Instagram in September. "Focus on your happiness. It's true that I can't jump anymore, but these past few days, I've been punching the air more times than usual.”

Pelé, now 81, is a three-time soccer World Cup winner and led Brazil to its first World Cup title. In 2000, FIFA named him the Player of the Century. He was included in the National Soccer Hall of Fame in 1993.
