A man allegedly tried to assassinate Cristina Kirchner on Thursday when the Argentine vice-president was returning to her home in the Recoleta neighborhood. Sources from the National Security Ministry confirmed that the suspect is a middle-aged man of Brazilian nationality, according to Página12.
The individual, later identified as Fernando Andrés Sabag Montiel, 35, raised a .22 caliber Bersa pistol to Kirchner's head. However, it did not fire.
The incident happened after 9 p.m. local time when the vice-president was returning home after presiding over a session in the National Senate.
The Vice President's entourage confirmed that she was unharmed, reported Infobae.
Minutes after the event, the first images of the incident captured by the Public Television of Argentina were broadcasted. A video circulating in the media shows the moment a man approaches the vice president and pulls the trigger without any bullet being fired. Within seconds, CFK's security personnel managed to immobilize the man and stop him.
It was later learned that the attacker is registered in the motor transport service and that he resides in the Buenos Aires neighborhood of Villa del Parque.
In addition to allegedly attempting to assassinate Vice President Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner, the suspect has a previous record of carrying a knife in his car, reported Infobae.
Alberto Fernandez, President of Argentina, will speak on national TV regarding the alleged assassination attempt against Cristina Kirchner at 11:15 p.m., local time.
"When hatred and violence prevail over the debate of ideas, they destroy societies and generate situations like today's: an assassination attempt. All my solidarity to Cristina Kirchner and her family. And my wish that all responsibilities are determined," wrote the country's Minister of Economy, Sergio Massa, on his official Twitter account.
