A woman was killed in a hit-and-run crash in Colorado after her rideshare driver dropped her off on the side of a highway because she “became ill,” authorities reported.
Just past midnight on Sunday, the woman and her friends got out of the vehicle on the side of Northbound I-25, around 22 miles north of Denver, because she “became ill in the vehicle.”
The woman, who has not yet been identified, “walked out into the roadway and was sideswiped by a dark truck that never stopped but continued driving,” according to a press release by the Thorton police.
The woman then fell over and was hit by a second car, which stopped after hitting her. When police officers arrived at the scene, they found the deceased woman lying in the roadway.
The highway was shut down for several hours while the police conducted an investigation.
On Monday, Adam Wooley, 33, turned himself in as the hit-and-run driver, police said. He was charged with a hit-and-run involving death and his truck was impounded.
It is unlikely that Wooley will face criminal charges, a Thorton police officer told the Denver Post.
“I do know that is not the cause of the accident,” he said. “It’s not that a vehicle ran off the side of the road and struck them. This person walked out into the roadway and was struck.”
