Several major U.S. airlines no longer require passengers and workers to wear face masks on domestic and some international flights.
The airlines include American Airlines, Alaska Air, Delta Airlines, Southwest Airlines, and United Airlines. These institutions stated that they dropped their mandates effective immediately, making face masks optional for both travelers and staff.
The decisions come hours after a U.S. judge on Monday struck down a federal mandate for passengers to decide whether or not to wear a facemask on flights.
The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) said after the court ruling that it would stop requiring passengers on planes, trains, and other public transportation to wear face masks "for the time being," according to Infobae.
American Airlines shared a statement claiming that "face masks will no longer be required for our customers and team members at U.S. airports and on domestic flights." However, the airline warned that "face masks may still be required based on local ordinances, or when traveling to or from certain international locations based on country requirements."

JetBlue Airways posted on its Twitter account that "in line with Monday's federal court ruling and TSA guidance, the use of facemasks will now be optional on JetBlue within the US. While no longer mandatory, customers and crewmembers may continue to wear facemasks in our terminals and aboard our aircraft."

Delta Air Lines also announced that it would update signs at the airport and their customer relations page to reflect the change, warning that local facemask mandates may remain in effect.
"Effective immediately, facemasks are optional for all airport employees, crew members, and customers inside U.S. airports and onboard all aircraft domestically, as well as on most international flights," the airline said in a statement.
"Delta employees and customers may continue to wear masks if they wish," the company added. "Local mask mandates in other countries may still be in effect."
