Six Republican senators are demanding the Biden administration answer why Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) loans were illegally received by Planned Parenthood affiliates.
The letter, sent Tuesday to Small Business Administrator Isabella Casillas Guzman, notes that Planned Parenthood affiliates have received about $120 million in PPP loans since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic.
During the first round of PPP loans, $80 million was given to 38 Planned Parenthood affiliates, wrote GOP Sens. Rand Paul (Ky.), Rick Scott (Fla.), Ron Johnson (Wis.), James Lankford (Okla.), Josh Hawley (Mo.) and Mitt Romney (Utah).
Because Planned Parenthood Federation of America employs nearly 16,000 people across the nation, the Small Business Administration found the medical provider to be ineligible for the PPP loans and asked for the affiliates to return the money, the Republicans noted.
Even after Planned Parenthood affiliates were found to be ineligible for PPP loans, 17 new loans were given out in 2021 totaling almost $40 million.
"Moreover, under your leadership, the SBA has forgiven at least 34 Planned Parenthood PPP loans to date," the senators wrote to Guzman.
The Small Business administrator is requested to provide all records about Planned Parenthood affiliate's PPP loans by May 10.
