A 3-year-old boy was fatally shot in the head last weekend during a road rage attack in Chicago, police reported.

Mateo Zastro was sitting in the back seat of his mother’s SUV next to his siblings when a gunman opened fire at around 8:30 p.m. on Friday in the neighborhood of West Lawn.

According to police, the family was leaving a shopping mall, where the mother of the 3-year-old victim got into a confrontation with an unidentified man. It is unclear what led to the confrontation.

The mom tried to drive away, but the suspect followed her and fired “several shots” into her vehicle, police said.

One of the bullets hit Mateo in the head. He was rushed to Chris hospital, where he was pronounced dead hours later.

The mother and the three other siblings were uninjured.

“That mother is still grieving. All she’s doing is clutching onto two dinosaurs … the baby’s favorite toy,” said Andrew Holmes, a community activist who is offering a $7,000 reward for information on the suspect.

According to Holmes, the shooter knew what they were doing when they fired the gun because there is no tint on the windows and you could clearly see the passengers inside the car.

“Our vow to the child’s family and to the entire city is we will not rest until those responsible for this senseless and cowardly act of violence are brought to justice,” 8th District Commander Bryan Spreyne said.

“To those responsible for taking this precious child’s life: Do the right thing, the honorable thing, and turn yourselves in.”
