A Maryland man stole a 5-ton military vehicle and led police on a highway chase on Friday, the same day he was released from jail, authorities said.

Police officers responded to a call reporting a stolen 1986 923-A 5-ton military vehicle that was privately owned in the town of Bel Air at around 6:35 p.m., according to a statement by the sheriff’s office.

The suspect, identified later as Michael D. Stevens II, 38, drove the military vehicle through the town and then onto Interstate 95, leading to a police chase of up to 100 miles per hour. However, police were unable to stop the vehicle, despite it crashing into multiple cars during the chase. No other injuries were reported.

“Multiple attempts to deploy stop sticks to disable the vehicle were attempted but failed,” the sheriff’s office said in a statement.

Stevens drove the military vehicle into the city of Baltimore, where he suddenly stopped at Conklin Street and got out of the vehicle in an attempt to flee on foot. Police officers were able to catch up to him and arrest him.

The suspect was charged with vehicle theft, two counts of first-degree assault, two counts of second-degree assault, and failing to obey a lawful order. He appeared before the court on Friday and was ordered to be held without a bond. He will have a bail review in court next week, the sheriff’s office added.

He was taken to the Harford County Detention Center by 9:30 p.m. The sheriff’s office said that Stevens had just been released from the same detention center earlier that day.

The incident is still under investigation.
