Police arrested five individuals in Michigan on Saturday after they attempted to smuggle undocumented immigrants from Canada into the U.S. on a jet ski.

Border Patrol agents saw a jet ski on the St. Claire River making its way into the U.S. with three people onboard, according to a press statement issued by the agency. Two individuals were dropped off near Port Huron. The jet ski then returned to pick up two more individuals.

The first two passengers were picked up by a car as soon as they were dropped off. Border Patrol agents followed the vehicle and stopped it. They arrested all three who were in the car.

The driver was identified as a 39-year-old U.S. citizen, while the two passengers were two males, aged 34 and 35, from Brazil.

As soon as the individuals from the second trip were dropped off, authorities moved to arrest them. They were identified as a 47-year-old man and a 44-year-old woman also from Brazil.

"This is a testament to how federal and international partnerships are vital in our border security mission," Marc Sledge, Director of the Great Lakes Air and Marine Branch, said in a statement. "Our agents perform an extraordinary job out there ... each and every day to protect America."

The American driver has been charged with a human smuggling offense, while the Brazilian nationals have been referred to prosecution for entering the country illegally.

While not as many migrants attempt to cross the U.S.-Canada border compared to those on the southern border, there are still frequent attempts by migrants to make their way into the U.S. through the north.
