Michigan school shooting suspect showed concerning behavior before the incident

Teachers had reported concerning behavior in the classroom from Ethan Crumbley two days before the high school shooting took place in Detroit, Michigan. School officials met with Crumbley’s parents hours before the shooting.

“We have since learned that the school did have contact with the student the day before and the day of the shooting for behaviors in the classroom that they felt was concerning,” said Oakland County Sherriff Michael Bouchard. “In fact, the parents were brought in the morning of the shooting and had a face-to-face meeting with the school. The content of that meeting of course is part of the investigation.”

Crumbley, 15, was charged as an adult on Wednesday with terrorism, murder, and other counts after a deadly shooting on Tuesday that left four students dead and seven others injured at a high school in Detroit. 

A professor reported concerning behavior by Crumbley on Monday. The teacher “saw and heard something that she felt was disturbing,” said Michael Bouchard on CNN. After the report, the school officials had a counseling session about the incident.

Hours before the shooting on Tuesday, "a different teacher in a different classroom saw some behavior that they felt was concerning, and they brought the child down to an office, had a meeting with school officials, called in the parents, and ultimately it was determined that he could go back into class."

After the shooting, investigators found two videos on Crumbley’s phone, in which he talked about shooting and killing students at the high school.

Crumbley also wrote that he had a “desire to shoot up the school to include murdering students” in a journal investigators found in his backpack.

Before the incident, Crumbley had never had disciplinary issues nor had he ever been expelled from school. While the motive for the shooting is still unknown, police are still investigating the matter.
