One day after Cuban Néstor Cortés warned that pitchers have started the major league season looking to make history, the Los Angeles Angels rookie left-hander Reid Detmers earned the second no-hit, no-run game of 2022 by brushing perfection against a dynamic Tampa Bay Rays bullpen. Detmers pitched one of the most improbable no-hit games in the 11th start of his young career. The 22-year-old prospect accomplished the feat in a 12-0 win over Tampa at Angel Stadium.

The pitcher opened with a 6.33 ERA in 10 career starts. While he had previously shown some glimpses of his skills, what he accomplished on Tuesday was historic. Manager Joe Maddon was even asked before the game if there was any chance Detmers could be sent back to the minor leagues. "That's how he should pitch and that's how he should look more often," Maddon said.

Detmers showed why he is so highly regarded by starting the year as MLB.com's No. 1 left-handed pitching prospect, limiting Tampa Bay to one base on balls and one error to complete the game with no hits despite striking out just two batters.

The rookie was still so nervous after the game that he "passed out" on the mound and claimed he had "trouble even remembering part of the last inning," which ended with Cuban Yandy Diaz giving up the 27th out with a grounder to shortstop to confirm the feat.

"It's something I've dreamed about since I was a little kid," Detmers said in the clubhouse after making history. "I didn't think it would happen. I don't even know. I probably won't even remember this interview tomorrow."

The No. 10 overall selection in the 2020 Draft out of the University of Louisville never pitched more than six innings as a pro, including 14 minor league starts, and never threw more than 97 pitches in an outing. Yet against the Rays he easily surpassed those totals, needing 108 pitches to complete the no hit no run.

It was the 12th no-hit game in the Angels’ history and the first since Taylor Cole and Felix Pena combined to pitch one against the Seattle Mariners on July 12, 2019. It was also the first single no-hit game since Jered Weaver pitched one against the Minnesota Twins on May 2, 2012. Detmers' is the second no-hit game pitched in the majors this year, as five New York Mets pitchers combined to throw one against the Philadelphia Phillies on April 29.
