More than 500 cases of unidentified flying objects were reported to the U.S. government, according to a newly declassified report summary released on Thursday. While authorities do not believe the sightings were associated with extraterrestrials, they claim they still pose a threat.
The events “continue to occur in restricted or sensitive airspace, highlighting possible concerns for the safety of flight or adversary collection activity,” the Office of the Director of National Intelligence said in its 2022 report.
Last year, the U.S. government opened the All-domain Anomaly Resolution Office, whose purpose is to analyze the reports of unidentified phenomena encountered in the sky.
In its 2022 report, the agency identified 510 Unidentified Anomalous Phenomena (UAP): 144 of which had been previously reported and 366 that were recently added.
While most of the cases had “terrestrial explanations, ”such as unmanned aircraft or balloon-like flying objects, others exhibited “unremarkable characteristics.” The agency said it is working to further analyze the reports that were classified as “uncharacterized and unattributed.”
A classified version of the report specifies how many of the objects were found near nuclear power plants or nuclear weapon storage facilities.
The Anomaly Resolution office is also tasked with identifying unrecognized objects moving underwater or in space.
