Today, Representative María Elvira Salazar (R-Fla.) held a press conference at the U.S. Capitol to express solidarity with the Cuban people. During her speech, she condemned the Biden Administration for refusing to take action in support of Cuba’s fight for freedom.
“For months, the Cuban people have done their part. Now, we, the United States, must do ours. This country is the shining light of democracy in a sea of darkness that engulfs the Cubans. But when the Cuban people took to the streets in July, the Biden Administration was all talk and no action,” said the Congresswoman.
The press conference follows the November 15 protests in Cuba, calling for democracy, human rights, the release of political prisoners and political freedom on the island.
“A few weeks ago, Cuba’s brave freedom fighters planned to go back to the streets and shout libertad – or liberty – once again. They encountered threats, kidnappings, and abuse. And yesterday when the time came, they were muzzled once again,” said Salazar about the protests.
Last week, Salazar sent a letter to Biden warning him of the regime’s plan to crack down on protestors during the demonstrations. In the letter, she asked President Biden to take action. President Biden did not respond to the letter.
In August, Representative Salazar introduced Operation Starfall, part of the American Freedom and Internet Access Act. The bill proposes to provide access to wireless communications abroad and ensure that access.
“We cannot stand by when tyrants shut off the lights and when American security is at risk. With Operation Starfall, we can improve homeland security and be ready to restore internet, freedom, and prosperity to those in need,” she explained in a press release.
“There are no excuses. Cuba will be free soon. We know that. The Castros’ days are numbered. They know it. The Cuban people are on the right side of history. The United States needs to be with them. Now — it’s up to the Biden Administration,” Salazar concluded.
