For those looking forward to a 2024 heavyweight rematch between President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump, the news may be disappointing.
Both Democratic and Republicans are split on whether they want current President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump as their candidate in the 2024 Presidential election, according to a new CNN and SSRS poll. The survey found that 51% of Democrats and leaning Democrats would prefer a candidate other than Joe Biden whereas 49% of Republicans and leaning Republicans would like someone other than Donald Trump, according to a survey from CNN and SSRS.
The survey found that 45% of Democrats and Democratic-leaning independents who are registered to vote should renominate Biden for 2024, while 51% would prefer a different candidate. Of those who opposed Biden’s nomination, 31% didn’t want him re-elected, 35% didn’t think he could win against potential Republican challengers, and 19% thought he was too old.
Republicans and Republican-leaning are similarly conflicted, with 50% saying they would like Trump as their presidential candidate in 2024. 49% would prefer someone else, with 39% of that group saying they did not want Trump to be President again and 22% saying they did not believe he could beat the Democrats.
The two political sides differed in the spread of their alternative candidates. Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) had the highest support at 5%, followed by former first lady Michelle Obama (4%), Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg (2%), and Vice President Kamala Harris (2%).
Meanwhile, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) was a clear front-runner for Republicans with a whopping 21 points of support. No other potential candidate polled higher than 1% point, including Donald Trump, Jr., Rep. Dan Crenshaw (R-TX), former governor Nikki Haley, and Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX).
Biden told ABC News he plans to run in 2024 “if I’m in good health.” If he does, he will be 81 years old on Election Day 2024.
Trump teased in January that he has made a decision about whether he is running but will announce it at a later date. He is currently 75 years old.
