More than a dozen classified documents were found at former Vice President Mike Pence’s home in Indiana last week, becoming the latest in a string of politicians that have been found with sensitive materials.

The documents were discovered at Pence’s home in Carmel, Indiana by a lawyer after classified documents were discovered in the possession of President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump, sources said.

The attorney, Matt Morgan, went through four boxes of documents at Pence’s home, discovering a small number of them with classified markings. The lawyer immediately notified the National Archives, which informed the Justice Department.

That same evening, the FBI requested to pick up the classified documents from Pence’s home. The rest of the material was sent to Washington, D.C., on Monday so that it could be reviewed by the Archives.

The contents of the documents and their level of sensitivity remain unclear. The FBI and the Justice Department’s National Security Division launched an investigation to find out how the documents ended up in Pence’s Indiana home.

Before the discovery of the documents, Pence repeatedly denied having any classified documents in his possession.

“Vice President Pence was unaware of the existence of sensitive or classified documents at his personal residence,” said PEnce’s representative to the Archives Greg Jacob. “Vice President Pence understands the high importance of protecting sensitive and classified information and stands ready and willing to cooperate fully with the National Archives and any appropriate inquiry.”
