CBP officers seize ton of marijuana labeled as 'pool toys' in Detroit

Customs and Border Protection officers in Detroit seized more than a ton of marijuana hidden in boxes labeled "foam pool toys."

Agents discovered the marijuana during an x-ray scan of a tractor-trailer headed from Canada into the United States at the Fort Street Cargo Facility on May 11, Customs and Border Protection said in a press release Thursday.

CBP officers and a K-9 team then physically inspected the vehicle and instead of finding pool toys, they found 2,175 pounds of marijuana in the boxes.

Law enforcement seized the illicit drugs and the vehicle.

"This seizure underscores CBP’s long standing commitment to the border security mission," Port Director Devin Chamberlain said. "The men and women of CBP continue to work diligently to keep our Nation and our communities safe."

While cannabis is legal for recreational use in 18 states according to USA Today, it is still illegal on a federal level.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection reported seizing nearly 90,000 pounds of marijuana in fiscal year 2022.
