Biden, U.S. allies to announce more sanctions on Russia

President Joe Biden and U.S. allies will announce more sanctions on Russia in response to its invasion of Ukraine, White House national security advisor Jake Sullivan told reporters Tuesday.

"[Biden] will join our partners in imposing further sanctions on Russia and tightening the existing sanctions to crack down on evasion and to ensure robust enforcement," Sullivan said. 

Biden will announced the new sanctions during his trip to Brussels later in the week. 

Sullivan did not specify what form the sanctions would take.

"What I will say is that one of the key elements of that announcement will focus not just on adding new sanctions but on insuring there is joint effort to crack down on evasion... by any attempt from any country to help Russia undermine, weaken, or get around the sanctions," he told reporters.

Biden is scheduled to attend an emergency NATO meeting during his trip to Europe and later visit Poland to meet with Polish President Andrzej Duda.

Sullivan stressed that Ukraine faces particularly tough days in the future as Russia continues its incursion.

"There will be hard days ahead in Ukraine. The hardest for the Ukrainian troops on the front lines, and the civilians under Russian bombardment. And this war will not end easily or rapidly," he said.

By visiting Europe, Biden is showing unity and "sending a powerful message," Sullivan added.
