President Joe Biden signed a $1.7 trillion federal spending bill into law on Thursday to help fund the government throughout the next fiscal year.

"Today, I signed the bipartisan omnibus bill, ending a year of historic progress," Biden tweeted. "It'll invest in medical research, safety, veteran health care, disaster recovery, VAWA funding – and gets crucial assistance to Ukraine. Looking forward to more in 2023."

Biden signed the bill during his vacation in the U.S. Virgin Islands, where he is spending the holidays. The White House said that the bill was flown to him in order to get his signature.

“The White House received the bill from Congress late afternoon on Wednesday. The bill was delivered to the President for his signature by White House staff on a regularly scheduled commercial flight,” a White House official told pool reporters.

The 4,000-page legislation includes $772.5 billion for non-defense discretionary programs and $858 billion in defense funding, representing an increase in spending for both areas for the next fiscal year.

The package also includes $45 billion in emergency assistance and humanitarian aid to Ukraine, an overhaul to the electoral vote-counting law, a ban on TikTok on federal devices, and changes to retirement savings rules.

Other ways the government plans to spend the tax dollars include Medicaid, pay raises for troops, Capitol police support, childcare, and environmental protection, among others.
