President Joe Biden announced on Wednesday that he intends to visit the U.S.-Mexico border during a trip to Mexico next week, as a record-breaking number of migrants cross the border.

When asked by a reporter whether he was “going to the border,” Biden responded: “That’s my intention.”

"We're working out the details now," he added.

“What do you want to see when you go to the border?” a reporter asked when he returned to the White House after a trip to Kentucky on Wednesday afternoon.

“Peace and Security. No, I’m going to see what is going on,” Biden replied. “I’m going to be making a speech tomorrow on border security and you’ll hear more about it tomorrow.”

It remains unclear when Biden plans to visit the border or what part of the area that spans almost 2,000 miles. However, he is scheduled to travel to Mexico City on Monday to meet with the leaders of Mexico and Canada.

Biden has been criticized for not visiting the border, which has seen a record number of migrant crossings. In Fiscal Year 2022, which ended on September 30, more than 2.3 million undocumented migrants were intercepted. More than 617,250 migrants have taken place in Fiscal Year 2023, with an average of 8,585 encounters a day, according to data from Customs and Border Protection services.

In December, President Biden said he had “more important things” to deal with than visiting the border during a trip to Arizona to promote the bipartisan CHIPS act, which provides subsidies for technology companies to make computer chips domestically.
