University of Alabama basketball player Darius Miles was arrested and charged with the murder of a 23-year-old woman near campus on Sunday, according to authorities.

In the early hours of Sunday, police responded to a report of a shooting less than a kilometer away from the University of Alabama’s campus, according to Tuscaloosa Police Captain Jack Kennedy. When authorities arrived at the scene they found Jamea Jonae Harris fatally shot in her car.

The driver of the car that Harris was in told police that someone had shot into their vehicle and that he had fired back, injuring one of the attackers.

"After processing the scenes, speaking with multiple witnesses, and viewing video surveillance, two suspects were developed," the release said.

"It appears that the only motive to this was a minor altercation that these individuals had with the victim as they were out on The Strip," Kennedy added.

According to Harris’ mother, DeCarla Cotton, the basketball player killed her daughter because she wouldn't talk to him.

"Took my baby's life because she wouldn’t talk to him!!!!" she wrote in a Facebook post.

In connection to the murder, Michael Lynn Davis, 20, was also charged in the shooting, according to a statement by the Tuscaloosa Violent Crimes Unit.

Miles, 21, was playing his third season as a forward for the Alabama Crimson Tide. After the incident, he was dismissed from the team.

"We were made aware of the recent charge against student-athlete Darius Miles, and he is no longer a member of the Alabama men's basketball team," the University of Alabama athletics department said in a statement.
