A 10-year-old boy from Milwaukee was charged as an adult with first-degree homicide after he fatally shot his mother because she refused to buy him a virtual reality headset from Amazon.
The shooting took place at around 6:50 a.m. on November 21 in the 7400 block of North 87 street in Milwaukee.
The boy initially told police that his mother woke him up at 6 a.m. and told him to get the semi-automatic Glock 43 that was in a lock box in her bedroom. He grabbed the gun and headed down to the basement where she was doing laundry. He said the gun accidentally went off as he was twirling the gun on his finger. The boy then told his sister, who then called the police to report the incident.
The next day, however, relatives contacted the police questioning his version of the story. The boy then admitted that he intentionally shot his mother, 44, according to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.
The boy told investigators that he got the gun because his mother wouldn’t let him make a purchase on Amazon. He admitted to getting the gun because he was mad at his mom. He said he aimed the gun at his mom and shot the wall to “scare her” but struck her instead.
The bullet entered his mother’s right eye and exited through the back of her head, according to the criminal complaint.
The day after he shot his mother, he logged into her Amazon account and ordered an Oculus Virtual Reality headset.
According to the boy’s family members, he has a history of disturbing behavior. On one occasion, he swung a puppy by his tail for fun. On another occasion, he set a balloon containing flammable liquid on fire.
The boy was charged as an adult with first-degree reckless homicide. He is being held at a juvenile detention facility. His name has not yet been released due to his age.
He is scheduled to appear at the Youth and Family Justice Center in Milwaukee on December 7.
