The Main Intelligence Directorate of the Ukrainian Defense Ministry reported on Tuesday that Russian General Vitaly Gerasimov was killed fighting in the city of Kharkiv, making him the second Russian general to be killed in Ukraine in a week.

"Another defeat among the best team of the army of the occupying country. During the battles near Kharkiv, Vitaliy Gerasimova was eliminated," Ukrainian Intelligence wrote on Facebook.

The agency said Gerasimova, chief of staff of Russia's 41st army, was killed along with other senior officers.

"Vitaly Gerasimov took part in the second Chechen war and the Russian military operation in Syria. He received a medal for the “return of Crimea," the ministry's publication reads.

Major General Andrey Sukhovetsky, deputy commander of the 41st Combined Arms Army of Russia's Central Military District, died last Wednesday when Ukrainian defense forces fired on the Russian offensive, according to Daily Mail.

A military source confirmed that he was killed "by a Ukrainian sniper" and said that a funeral would be held in Russia to bid farewell to Sukhovetsky, the media outlet continued.
