More than 11,000 Russian troops have been killed, Ukraine's Defense Ministry claims

Ukraine's Defense Ministry reported Sunday that more than 11,000 Russian troops have been killed since Russian President Vladimir Putin invaded his neighbor on Feb. 24. 

The ministry did not report the Ukrainian casualties but stated that more than 2,000 pieces of Russian military equipment have been destroyed. This includes nearly 300 tanks, which the Ukrainian tax agency said would not have to be declared as income.

"In particular, in the Luhansk region, the entire front line is littered with corpses and lined equipment of the invaders," the ministry wrote, as translated by Google.

On Saturday alone, over 650 seriously wounded Russian soldiers were taken to a hospital in Luhansk, the ministry stated.

Using the Defense Ministry's numbers, this means that on average, more than 1,000 Russian troops have been killed every day since the war began.

Even if the number has been greatly inflated by Ukranian officials, it would still be a devastating loss for Russian forces. 

Put in another perspective, the United States lost less than 2,500 service members in Afghanistan over 20 years.

The United Nations on Sunday reported that more than 1,100 Ukranian civilians have died in the conflict with Russia since the end of February, but acknowledged that the real number of casualties are likely "considerably higher."
