Butter boards have become the latest social media trend, with thousands of users spreading, smearing, and decorating butter on different surfaces.
While the new trend might look like a regular charcuterie board or cheese board, non-social media users should not mix up the two.
The new trend literally involves softening butter, and feathering it out on a wooding cutting board, or a plate, of a marble dish.
For the finishing touch, the butter is artfully topped with honey, lemon zest, chili flakes, or any other ingredient that TikTok users believe will go well with butter. Other social media users have topped the butter with figs, tomatoes, edible flowers—the list goes on.
Serve it with toasted bread, and voila!, you have the latest TikTok trend that is perfect for a party.
The trend was made viral by Brooklyn-based recipe developer Justine Doiron, who claims the creator of the butter board is chef Joshua McFadden, who included a recipe for a butter board in his 2017 book “Six Seasons: A New Way With Vegetables."
“A butter board is the next charcuterie board trend,” wrote Doiron in her first butter board post. “Don’t quote me on it – but if it happens….then you can quote me on it.”
Butter boards have been viral since mid-September, with the hashtag #ButterBoard being viewed more than 116.4 million times on TikTok and the hashtag #Butter searched more than 9.6 billion times.
