Newly-elected U.S. Rep. Mayra Flores is getting a quick start in Washington.
The first Republican Latina to be elected from Texas boldly expressed how proud she was of her daughter for standing up to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi after the San Francisco Democrat gave her a little push to the side during a photo-op last week.
“I am so proud of my strong, beautiful daughter for not allowing this to faze her,” Flores, 30, said in a tweet with a video of the incident that took place during her swearing-in ceremony on June 21.
“She continued to smile and pose for the picture like a Queen,” Flores added.

No child should be pushed to the side for a photo op. PERIOD!! https://t.co/TA50EntDoq
The video depicts the House Speaker waving to another person who is off-camera. When Pelosi looks at Flores’ daughter who was standing beside her, she extended her elbow at the same time the young girl moved to the side.
“No child should be pushed to the side for a photo op. PERIOD!!” Flores said, blasting the House Speaker in the tweet.
The incident did not go unnoticed even by some members of Hollywood who commented on the matter.
“I love this princess stood her ground, while Nancy showed her true colors,” said actor James Wood in a tweet.
Ironically, the brief little tiff happened just as Pelosi was introducing Flores to the U.S. House of Representatives.
“It’s a great honor to welcome Congresswoman Flores to the Capitol and to the Congress of the United States with great congratulations,” Pelosi said Sunday. “And again, grateful for her leadership and her beautiful family who is here today.”
Flores was sworn in as a Member of Congress during the ceremony, which makes her the first Mexican-born U.S. congressional representative.
She legally emigrated to the U.S. at six years old and subsequently became a naturalized American citizen. She spent most of her life in Texas, in the Rio Grande Valley.
Shortly after the ceremony, the House Speaker shook hands with the newly elected Republican representative.
“Thank you, Congresswoman Flores, for your courage to run for office and best wishes for your success,” Pelosi said. "It’s an honor to work with you."
Flores is a pro-life Texan who celebrated the recent Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization ruling which effectively has overturned the Court's prior 1973 decision, Roe v. Wade.
“I thank God for the Supreme Court's historic decision today,” Flores recently said. “It is clear that the Constitution never created a right to abortion, and this ruling rightly returns the authority to regulate abortion back to the people and their elected representatives in the states. All life is precious, and today life won,” she wrote on social media.
Since Flores came to Congress as the result of a special election, she will face Democratic nominee Vicente Gonzalez in November.
