Texas Gov. Greg Abbott confirmed on Thursday that the state sent its first bus of undocumented migrants to Denver, as thousands of migrants continue to be sent from the border to northern cities.
In a press release, the governor said that the migrants boarded the bus in Texas and were dropped off in Denver’s downtown, near Civic Center Park.
"Texas' overwhelmed and overrun border communities should not have to shoulder the flood of illegal immigration due to President Biden's reckless open border policies, like his mass catch and release without court dates or any way to track them," Abbott said in the release.
"Until the President and his Administration step up and fulfill their constitutional duty to secure the border, the State of Texas will continue busing migrants to self-declared sanctuary cities like Denver to provide much-needed relief to our small border towns,” he continued.
Since the spring of 2022, Abbott has bused over 20,000 migrants from the Texas-Mexico border to several northern cities, including New York City, Washington, D.C., Chicago, and Philadelphia.
Abbott ramped up the busing of migrants after the immigration policy Title 42 expired last week, which allowed border agents to quickly expel migrants without reviewing their asylum cases.
Last week, Texas sent two busloads carrying around 50 undocumented migrants to Vice President Kamala Harris’ home in D.C.
“Until President Biden steps up and does his job, Texas will continue busing migrants to sanctuary cities to provide relief to our overwhelmed border towns,” said Andrew Mahaleris, a spokesperson for Abbott, last week.
Denver’s Mayor Michael Hancock reactivated the city’s Emergency Operations Center in response to the recent influx of migrants. Earlier this month, the city also stopped sheltering migrants who were not being processed by immigration authorities as space continues to run out in shelters around the city.
