On Thursday, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) called Texas Gov. Greg Abbott (R) an "absolute fraud" during a Senate floor speech about the recent mass school shooting that left 19 children and two adults dead.
Following Texas Democratic gubernatorial candidate Beto O'Rourke's outburst during a Wednesday press conference being held by Abbott and several Uvalde political and law enforcement officials, Abbott asked people to place their agendas to the side as the city processes the aftermath of the shooting.
Schumer, on Thursday, in response to Abbott's comments said "My God, how dare he? What an absolutely fraud the governor of Texas is. And this is the same Gov. Abbott who tomorrow ... will got speak at the [NRA] convention in Houston."
"Gov. Abbott, will you ask your MAGA buddies and NRA pals to put aside their agendas and think of someone other than themselves like you asked the families to do? ... Of course not," he added. "No amount of bloodshed seems to be enough for MAGA Republicans."
Schumer's remarks were delivered prior to a scheduled Senate vote on a piece of legislation called the Domestic Terrorism Protection Act, which is aimed at combating acts of violent extremism driven by white supremacy. The bill is primarily a reaction to the mass shooting that took place recently in Buffalo, New York during which 10 black people were killed. The FBI is investigating the active shooter incident as a hate crime.
