A mother from the U.S. deep south says the fact her child likes eating raw green vegetables means he’s really a transgender, according to a report published by the British Daily Mail newspaper.

The Louisiana mom made the bizarre assertion while testifying before the Louisiana State House's Health and Welfare Committee to speak against a new bill, HB 463, which would ban all 'gender-affirming' treatments for minors.

Those procedures include top surgery, which adds or removes breast or chest tissue to create a more feminine or masculine trait. It also bans the use of 'puberty blockers'.

The mother described how her son had suffered long term issues with anxiety and sleeping, and she has become so concerned she took him to see neurologists to have brain scans.

Once the child started sleeping, he developed what she described as 'odd' food preferences.

“They were always like green vegetables, raw green vegetables, which, if you know kids, most kids don’t like to eat those things,” she said.

But the Louisiana woman believes she has found the reason why: according to her, once she ‘realized’ her son was ‘transgender,’ “the pattern of everything that he had experienced as a child - including eating green vegetables because that boosts testosterone - were just methods of his body trying to become who he was meant to be…. His brain does not match his physiology,” she testified.

According to the Daily Mail report, “it is thought that some foods can have an impact on testosterone levels, including green leafy vegetables, fatty fish, avocados, eggs, cocoa products, and certain berries among others.”

The bill’s opponents have said removing access to transgender transition treatments could make mental health risks for children who identify as trans, worse.

One of those opponents, who also testified was iDr. Ryan Pasternak, a professor of pediatric medicine at Louisiana State University.

“HB 463 is passed, it will cause permanent...irreversible changes to children. In worsening our mental health crisis, it will lead to more suicide attempts,” he said.

But those in support of ending these treatments have focused on the fact that like top surgeries are permanent and cannot be reversed, which is why the procedure should only be allowed for adults.

Those against trans treatments for children also say the long-term effects of puberty blockers are still being explored, and they “could lead to fertility issues and inability to orgasm,” the Mail reported.

Rep. Gabe Firment said HB 463, who supports the legislation said the bill is “not about hate,” but about protecting children from treatments he considers “experimental.”
