Former President Donald Trump issued his first formal statement following the Russian invasion of Ukraine by saying that it would not have happened if he were president.

"If I were in Office, this deadly Ukraine situation would never have happened!" Trump said, according to his spokeswoman, Liz Harrington.

He slammed President Joe Biden on Wednesday during a fundraiser Wednesday at his Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida, The Wall Street Journal reported.

"I mean, he’s taking over a country for $2 worth of sanctions. I’d say that’s pretty smart," he said.

Trump spoke about Ukraine on Wednesday evening with Fox News.

He called the events a "very sad thing for the world and the country."

Biden did not do enough stop the incursion, Trump said.

"[Russian President Vladimir Putin] was going to be satisfied with a piece and now he sees the weakness and the incompetence and the stupidity of this administration," the former president contended.
