President Gabriel Boric of Chile denounced Nicaragua's Ortega regime this Saturday at the Ibero-American Summit being held in Santo Domingo.

In his speech before the plenary session, Boric decried the number of Ortega's opponents who have been stripped of their nationality and sent into exile, saying the regime "does not seem to know that the homeland carries their soul and blood, something that cannot be removed by decree."

The Chilean president specifically mentioned the cases of the distinguished writers Sergio Ramírez and Gioconda Belli along with the historic ex-guerrilla Dora María Téllez.

"Today we see the risks and threats that imperil democracy throughout the world, and we must respond with more democracy, not with less," he said.

The Chilean president spoke about common issues of concerning the region such as migration, drug trafficking, the environment, gender equality and the economic regulation.

"Along with these enormous challenges, we must address the urgencies that afflict our peoples," he said of the issues he felt should be covered at the upcoming South American Conference on Migration in Santiago, Chile in October.

The issue of migration "constitutes perhaps one of the greatest regional challenges," and should be approached jointly, declared Boric.

"We all have to be capable of achieving safe, regular, orderly and humane migration, which safeguards the rights of people who emigrate and also the rights and security of the countries that host them."
