At least 23 people were injured Tuesday morning during a shooting at a busy subway station in Brooklyn, New York.

The incident occurred inside the 36th Street station in Sunset Park, Brooklyn. According to authorities, 10 of the victims have gunshot wounds, and the rest inhaled smoke. Reports indicate at least 33 bullets were fired.

Multiple photos and videos shared on social media show the moment when the affected people evacuated the cars to get to safety from the shooting.

Those wounded by bullets are seen lying on the floor of the station surrounded by blood.

A man wearing a gas mask and an orange operator's vest may have thrown a can of smoke onto the subway platform to distract people, police and security officials told NBC News.

Police recovered a Glock pistol and several high-capacity magazines at the station. The weapon was apparently jammed, which may have prevented the attacker from causing even greater damage, reported EFE news agency quoted by El Pais.

The suspect remains at large, an NYPD spokesman told Fox News.

New York Governor Kathy Hochul said on Twitter that her office is working together with the Metropolitan Transportation Authority and the NYPD to update information on the event.

"Thank you to everyone who is working to keep our neighbors safe after today's shooting in Sunset Park," Hochul added, urging the community to contact 911 if they witness any suspicious activity.
