New York City Mayor-elect Eric Adams during a speech on Thursday warned Black Lives Matter leader Hawk Newsome not to mess with the Big Apple.

“We’re not going to surrender to those who are saying, ‘We’re going to burn down New York.’ Not my city,” Adams said.

Last month Newsome threatened the city with “riots, fire, and bloodshed” if Adams reinstates the NYPD’s anti-gun unit. “If they think they are going back to the old ways of policing, then we’re going to take to the streets again,” said Newsome.

During his campaign, Adams promised to double down on crime in the city. To do so, the Mayor-elect plans to reinstate plainclothes police to fight gun violence.

“I made it clear on the campaign trail: I’m going to put in place not the Anti-Crime Unit, I’m going to put in place a plainclothes gun unit,” he said during a morning appearance on CNN.

“This city is not going to be a city of riots, it’s not going to be a city of burning,” Adams said. “This is going to be a city where we are going to be safe. We are going to have effective policing that is not heavy-handed. We’re going to have the backs of our police officers, we’re going to hold them accountable to do their job.”
