'I like it': New Jersey governor supports fellow Democrat Newsom’s Florida ads against DeSantis
During an appearance on CNN on Tuesday, New Day host Brianna Keilar asked about Newsom’s out-of-state ad campaign, which targets Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) and his conservative policies, such as the Parental Rights in Education Act that prohibits “classroom instruction by school personnel or third parties on sexual orientation or gender identity” in kindergarten through third grade.

The Democratic governor of New Jersey backed California Gov. Democrat Gavin Newsom’s (D) new ad buy in Florida that invites residents to move to his state, saying a “hard right radical bloc” on the Supreme Court had turned the country into a “patchwork quilt.”
“I like it,” Murphy responded.
“It’s thanks, most recently, to a hard right radical bloc on the U.S. Supreme Court that we’ve become a patchwork quilt country right now,” he continued.
“And I think the states that are on the right side of history, and I’m proud that New Jersey is, we need to stand up and be counted.”
On the Fourth of July, Newsom launched an ad campaign in Florida saying “freedom is under attack” there due to the actions of Republicans leaders, who he accused of banning books, making it harder to vote and restricting speech in classrooms.
He then invited Floridians to fight the GOP or move to California, “where we still believe in freedom.”
Murphy said in the interview his state was available to move to as well.
“We need to remind people around the country that if you value values, you should move to states like New Jersey,” he said.
Critics have pointed out California has lost tens of thousands of residents to red states like Florida and Texas.
Rep. Kat Cammack (R-Fla.) pointed out that 60,000 Californians have gotten their Florida driver’s licenses over the last three years.
“In Florida, we're about freedom and faith and family. And in California, it looks like high taxes, crack pipe distribution centers, homeless tent cities and apps that you can download in order to report feces on the sidewalk. It's no wonder that everyone is fleeing to the Sunshine State,” she said on Fox News on Tuesday.
2024 watchers have speculated the odd out-of-state ad buy was a sign Newsom was considering a presidential run.
