Nine people, including one teenager, were shot in an apparent drive-by shooting in Newark on Thursday night, officials reported.

The shooting took place at around 6:20 p.m. in front of a bodega on the corner of Shephard and Clinton Place.

"Five of the shooting victims were able to get themselves to an area hospital on their own. Out of those five, one of them was a juvenile, 17 years old," said Newark acting public safety director Raul Malave.

Four adults and the 17-year-old showed up at Newark Beth Israel Medical Center with gunshot wounds. Four other victims were transported to University Hospital, also with gunshot wounds. All victims are in stable condition.

Authorities learned of the shooting through the ShotSpotter system, a new technology that detects gunshots and alerts the police, according to The New York Times

While police have not identified a suspect, they have a vehicle of interest. The shooters allegedly were inside a white Honda Pilot that was stolen from Jersey City.

Officials do not know what led up to the shooting. It is also unclear whether it was one gunman or multiple shooters.

The incident is still under investigation. They are working to access the surveillance videos from the store and homes nearby to shed light on the incident.
