Juan Gerardo Treviño Chávez, known as "El Huevo” and widely considered to be the leader of the Northeast Cartel (CDN), was arrested early Monday morning following a shootout between drug traffickers and the Mexican military, La Opinion reported.

According to the outlet, eight of Treviños escorts from CDN’s so-called Tropa del Infierno were also killed during the exchange in the city of Nuevo Laredo in the Mexican state of Tamaulipas.

Following Treviños capture, residents of Nuevo Laredo reported multiple confrontations, blockades and vehicle burnings. The bridges connecting Mexico to the United States were also reportedly closed for several hours and Nuevo Laredo Mayor Carmen Lilia Canturosas took to Twitter to call on residents to “exercise extreme caution.”

According to official sources quoted by Infobae, there were at least 30 clashes between members of the Tropa del Infierno and the Mexican military between Sunday night and Monday morning. Additionally, multiple roads were blocked and dozens of vehicles were set on fire.

In view of what happened, the governor of Tamaulipas, Francisco García Cabeza de Vaca, indicated that his administration is maintaining communication with federal authorities to contain the situation. He also indicated that he instructed the Public Security Secretariat in Tamaulipas to provide additional support to his citizens.

"To our families in Nuevo Laredo, I inform you that I am in constant communication with federal authorities, in light of the events that took place early this Monday morning," he informed via Twitter.

Likewise, the U.S. Consulate in Nuevo Laredo issued an alert advising Americans to avoid the city and cancelling all consular appointments.
