During a routine check at the Aguaruto prison, located in the Mexican state of Sinaloa, authorities from the local Public Security Secretariat located weapons, drugs, alcoholic beverages, as well as 1,250,000 Mexican pesos in cash ($61,500).

State Public Security Secretary Cristóbal Castañeda reported that seven long arms were seized, including two AR-15s and AK-47s, a sub-machine along with six small arms. There were also two packages of marijuana and seven fighting roosters.

In addition, what appeared to be a family’s apartment was located in the middle of the prison. The air conditioned unit, whose walls were plastered with images of drug trafficker Joaquin ‘Chapo’ Guzmán Loera, had a living room and a bedroom and was equipped with a television set, a stereo system and a refrigerator.

Sinaloa Governor Rubén Rocha Moya argued that his administration had no knowledge of the existence of the luxury facilities.

In 2017, five inmates escaped from Aguaruto prison, among them Juan José Esparragoza Monzó, also known as El Azulito, son of one of the founders of the Sinaloa cartel nicknamed ‘El Azul.’

According to police records, although Esparragoza was treated in a hospital, he died of COVID-19 related complications in January 2021 in the city of Culiacán.

Following the seizure, María Emma Alcaraz González, director of the Aguaruto prison, was removed from her post, El Sol de Sinaloa reported.
