Hurricane Beryl made landfall this Monday on the island of Carriacou, in Grenada, as a powerful category 4 hurricane, as it advanced through the waters of the Caribbean Sea.
Around 11:10 a.m. local time, the eye of Beryl reached Carriacou Island with sustained winds of 241 km/h, according to the National Hurricane Center (NHC).
“This is an extremely dangerous and life-threatening situation,” the agency reported, cautioning people within the warning area to take “preparations to protect life,” and advising that “property should be rushed to completion.”
“Residents of the Grenadine Islands and Carriacou Island should not abandon their shelter, as winds will increase rapidly within Beryl's eyewall,” the NHC warned.
Hurricane watches were active in Barbados, Grenada, Saint Lucia, Tobago and Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, where thousands of people were sheltering in homes and shelters. The last major hurricane to hit the southeastern Caribbean was Ivan in 2004, which left dozens dead and catastrophic damage in Grenada as a Category 3 storm.
On the forecast path, the eye of the hurricane will move through the southeast and center of the Caribbean Sea towards Jamaica and later Mexico.
The Jamaican government has issued a hurricane warning. Alerts have also already come into force for the southern coast of the Dominican Republic from Punta Palenque to the border with Haiti and for the southern coast of Haiti from the border with the Dominican Republic to Anse d'Hainault.
